As the anime to live action adaptation frenzy ramps up in the states, the previously announced ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL is in the process of choosing its cast. The adaptation will be produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau through Lightstorm Entertainment. Robert Rodriguez is set to direct.
As of now, the lead actress role has been narrowed to three. Rosa Salazar (MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS), Maika Monroe (IT FOLLOWS), and the Disney star Zendaya (K.C. UNDERCOVER). However, the movie has not been officially green-lit by Twenty First Century Fox due to budget problems. The involved companies are working to bring the budget down to under $200 million.
ALITA is about a female cyborg that is found in a junkyard by a scientist. She has no memory of before she was discovered except for a set of lethal fighting skills and goes on to become a bounty hunter. It sounds kind of like a “Cyborg Jason Bourne” minus the CIA manhunt.
While no official selection for the lead role has happened, a final announcement is expected in a few weeks.
