This New Documentary Shows Hayao Miyazaki’s Intimate Struggle with His Art [Video]

Miri Malek May 23, 2017 August 20th, 2019

Hayao Miyazaki, founder of famed Studio Ghibli, recently reemerged from retirement and we couldn’t be more excited. The Spirited Away director announced his retirement in 2013 at the age of 72, but he couldn’t stay away from his love for film for long. There have been rumors about the piece for the past few years, and we finally have hard evidence in the form of a new documentary. The process of his resignation from the world of animation followed by his surprising return is the subject of the new documentary, NEVER ENDING MAN. In the trailer, Miyazaki laments on his age, saying, “It’d be ridiculous to think I’d ever regain my youth… But what do I do with the time I have left?”

Clearly, this great artist can’t remain idle, and even in his advanced age his creative mind stays sharp. This documentary begins with his struggle with aging and the artistic process, followed by his breakthrough, when he starts working with a team of CGI artists. Collaborating with these artists in a new form, Miyazaki is shown designing, storyboarding, and directing a new project that is made in 3D computer images. The short film is about a caterpillar and it’s slated to be released this year, while a feature length film on the same subject should be released in 2019. The documentary brings you behind-the-scenes in the making of this new work. It looks like Miyazaki is about to revolutionize the world of 3D animation, just like he revolutionized animated films.

The documentary is premiering on Japan’s NHK WORLD TV on June 2 and 3. An international release of the documentary hasn’t been announced yet, but with the trailer already dubbed and subtitled in English, our hopes are high for a screening soon. Until then, get excited for the documentary and Miyazaki’s upcoming film by watching the the trailer below:
