Teaser Reveals New Spin on Godzilla Legacy Coming in ’16
Back in September, we reported on an upcoming Godzilla. Tentatively titles SHIN GOJIRA at the time, the 29th film in the iconic monster series promised a more realistic approach for the franchise. Helmed by director Shinji Higuchi (ATTACK ON TITAN) and written by the undisputed King of Geeks, Hideaki Anno (EVANGELION), the film now has a new English title, teaser, and poster art for fans to chew on before its debut next summer.
Higuchi promised a raw Godzilla experience this time around. From the get-go, GODZILLA RESURGENCE’s sets a rough-hewn tone, with an aesthetic out of CLOVERFIELD’s found footage playbook. The teaser is complete with frantic shaky-cams stumbling through frenzied streets as citizens scream in terror. That familiar lizard’s howl ends the trailer on an ominous note, complete with the iconic combo of red and white font on black background (Evangelion anyone?). The stripped-down color scheme is matched by a new poster, with a pitch-dark Godzilla surrounded by bright crimson.
Whether or not you are down with the this new look of Japan’s most beloved giant lizard, there’s little doubt that anticipation runs high in Tokyo right now.
GODZILLA RESURGENCE is slated to hit Japanese theaters July 29, 2016.
