Na Hong-jin has become a serious player in the Korean film industry in a very short amount of time. He burst onto the scene in 2008 with the breathless thriller THE CHASER, and followed it up three years later with another well-received exercise in tension, THE YELLOW SEA. Today, despite five years of inactivity, Na’s two title filmography remains strong enough to generate instant excitement for the release of the trailer for his latest screw-turner, THE WAILING.
THE WAILING stars Kwak Do-won as Jong-goo, a detective whose attention is split between a myriad of unfortunate incidents plaguing a quiet Korean village: mysterious deaths, possible murders, inexplicable sickness. It’s not a great situation to begin with, and then Jong-goo’s young daughter falls ill with the strange illness spreading through town, because Na Hong-jin has never met a situation he couldn’t escalate. Though Jong-goo initially suspects a newly arrived Japanese man, his investigations begin pointing towards the possibility of a more supernatural cause at the center of things. Realizing he’s in over his head, the detective teams up with a shaman (Hwang Jung-min) and an enigmatic woman (Chun Woo-hee) to find the source of all this misery.
THE WAILING will reach US shores on May 27, so keep an eye out for showtimes near you. Just make sure you carve out a good chunk of time for its nearly 3 hour long run-time.
