The live-action GHOST IN THE SHELL’s been subject to controversy & criticism since its conception–Hollywood’s already got an unfortunate track record with beloved anime adaptations, and casting a lily-white Scarlett Johansen to play the lead in an iconic Japanese property seemed like a fairly egregious sign for the film’s potential.
But now the movie’s premiere is just around the corner. While most of the trailers thus far have played up style over narrative substance, the latest look at the film offers more in the way of plot. Johansen stars as Major, a “human/cyborg hybrid” special agent designed to take out the city’s most dangerous criminals. But while Major believes that her robot makeover saved her life, she learns that her creators may have been less than altruistic in their intentions. Check it out:
What do you think? Does it look like a worthy adaptation, or this another whitewashed travesty?
