The ceremonial graduation walk to receive one’s diploma and shake the dean’s hand has become a staple of the American college experience. Various students can diversify their experiences in any number of ways. At my graduation walk, I recall giving the dean of my school a BIG hug. I saw another student perform a short but elaborate dance routine on the way to picking up his diploma.
A student graduating from California State Polytechnic University’s Business Administration School could be seen carrying a large pillow featuring his beloved anime waifu Nico Yazawa across the stage last Saturday.
Nico Yazawa is one of the three primary heroines of Love! Live, a third year high school student (despite her petite appearance) who strives to form a school idol group with her friends. Her dark twin-tail hairstyle and love of the color pink are both evident on the pillow in question.
The wonderfully bizarre moment first came to light when Twitter user @honkposter observed it on a livestream, taking a screenshot, and posting about it. It quickly gained thousands of Likes and Retweets.

Some netizens even took offense at the graduate’s choice of girl from the anime.
This man is still a legend despite choosing Nico of all people. pic.twitter.com/X1as3KXO2d

The brave lover was eventually identified as Ryan Nghi-Thai, who evidently regrets nothing!!!! I wonder what he’ll do to show his adoration for Nico should he get any more degrees down the line.

At the end of the day, everyone left with a valuable lesson that is rarely taught in schools. The power of waifus and one’s love for them is something that cannot be tamed or stopped even by the strictest rules of decorum.
Congratulations, Ryan and Nico!
