The voice actors behind the original Ghost in the Shell” (1995) are back to dub the American live-action version in Japanese.
This should be a relief for fans because Japanese audiences have been disappointed in recent years by the dubbing picks. More often than not, dubbing is poorly casted choosing the latest popular stars over actual voice actors. The Avengers for example, flopped. This is not the case with Ghost in the Shell obviously, because the actors have essentially done the same job before as the same characters more than two decades ago.
Mamoru Oshii, the director of the 1995 film is encouraging of the actors for this round of dubbing.
“It’s been awhile since they’ve played these characters. definitely want them to deliver the performances they see fit. They’re all pros, so there’s nothing to worry about. I can only say that this is something to look forward to,” says Oshii.
Akio Ostuska plays the voice of Batou, Koichi Yamadera is returning as the voice of Togusa, and Atsuko Tanaka isScarlett Johansson’s character, Mira who seeks revenge on the scientists who transformed her into a new body after a terrorist attack. The film tells the story of her discovering who she really is.
“Do you remember anything about the attack? We made you a new body.”
Ghost in the Shell will be released March 31, 2017.
