A new reality TV show will tackle South Korea’s English proficiency problem. While the country has invested tons of money into English education, competence for the language is still relatively low.
“My English Phobia” will follow six celebrities with poor English language skills: k-pop idol Kim Hyo-yeon of Girls Generation, actress Hwang Shin-hye, singer Choi Whee-sung, actress Jeong Si-a, comedian Ji Sang-ryeol, and model Han Hyun-min (who was recently included in Time Magazine’s list of Most Influential Teens) as they improve their proficiency under the teaching of well-known English tutor Lee Si-won.
The eight episode program, which premiers on Dec. 4 on tvN, will show the cast studying English for different reasons and applying it to situations like working overseas, helping their kids with homework, and making friends from foreign countries.
“The purpose of the show is to assuage ‘English phobia’ that most Koreans experience when learning the language,” Park Hyun-woo, the program’s chief director, said.
“The main characters cover diverse age groups, from 10s to 50s, who are in desperate need of learning the language despite their high tension and fears. I hope the show can shed light on the excitement of learning English and guide the audience to an easy way of learning.”
Many of the celebrities featured have publicly talked about their struggles with learning English. Hopefully this show will help them get the skills they need and inspire others to do so too!
