Choi Min-sik Bringing the Badass to the Ballot This Election Year
Fighting for his life up against a vicious tiger in the barrenness of winter woodlands? Child’s play. Seeking brutal vengeance one (or a dozen) bodyguards at a time? No sweat. Helming the most successful film in Korean movie history? With panache. Capturing the essence of an animated duck? Ain’t no thing but a chicken wing.
You get the point: In the face of Korean badass Choi Min-sik, we mere mortals must bow down. After capturing the hearts and minds of fans worldwide over the past decade, it’s a natural fit that Choi’s hitting the campaign trail for his next role.
Per Korean Film Biz Zone, Choi will star in MAYOR OF SEOUL. In the “election drama,” he will feature opposite Kwak Do-won, who recently featured in Cannes-nominated THE SHAMELESS. In the director’s chair is Park In-jae of 2011’s MOBY DICK.
Plot details on MAYOR OF SEOUL are scarce at this point. However, we know the film will follow Choi as the titular politician, “who faces a reelection campaign, while KWAK is set to appear as the mayor’s aide.” But one can guess there’ll be a recipe with some combination of corruption, violent dealings, and shady characters with suits on doing shady stuff in dark rooms.
And for Choi Min-sik, who thrives in all manner of cinematic conflict, they seem like the recipe for another hit in the near future. Per Korea Film, production will kick start “in the first half of 2016.”
