Like JAWS, but bigger–and in China. Like JAWS, but starring Li Bingbing. And Jason Statham. And Ruby Rose. And Dwight from The Office?
This movie is gonna be wild, y’all.
Upcoming Hollywood-Chinese co-production blockbuster THE MEG just dropped its trailer, and even in the span of a 2 1/2 minute trailer, the mood whiplash is real. “The Meg,” you see, is a cute nickname for the Megalodon, a montrously enormous species of ancient shark thought to have died out 2 million years ago. Only apparently there’s one of these mega-sharks on the loose off the coast of China, and it’s up Jason Statham and his crew to kill the beast and save the masses of unwitting, boogy-boarding tourists. The film is based on the 1997 sci-fi horror novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten.
And while the trailer starts off as chilling and self-serious as ever, halfway through an unexpected song choice brings things to glorious new heights of campy, self-aware summer Blockbuster fun.
Fun fact: apparently, Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing (X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST) was originally cast as the leading lady; when she dropped out because of scheduling issues, Li Bingbing took her place. The role required a Bingbing.
While other headlines are wondering if THE MEG trailer is “Too Cheesy Or Just Cheesy Enough?” we here at AsianCrush have decided that we will definitely be throwing our money at this production. Bring on the giant sharks.
