True love often appears in the most random places. Kentucky Fried Chicken’s won and clogged the hearts of people around the world. Now, they are banking on the seductive charm of a certain Colonel Sanders.
In what definitely sounds like an otaku fever dream that somehow slithered into a pitch meeting, KFC announced “I Love You Colonel Sanders | A Finger Lickin’ Good Dating Simulator” this week.
The choose your own adventure visual novel imagines the jolly, sagacious Colonel as a graceful anime hunk. You attend a prestigious culinary school named the University of Cooking School: Academy For Learning. While there, you catch the eye of Colonel Sanders, who is trying to live out his dream of starting an internationally acclaimed chicken chain.
Unfortunately, you will face two rivals for both gourmet prestige and the Colonel’s heart, Aeshleigh and Van Van. Aeshleigh is your fiery, snooty arch-rival. Van Van is a thinly veiled, preening Jojo replica with big muscles. Whether or not the latter is after the Colonel’s love is unclear at the moment. Is the game going to be a full on bisexual quadrangle? That would be pretty revolutionary for KFC!
Rounding out the cast are your quirky, dark-skinned best friend and Professor Dog, who is exactly what he sounds like he would be.
It might all seem like a recipe for crazy or an elaborate April Fool’s Day prank, but according to Steam, KFC WILL be launching ILYKC on September 24th.
You can watch the nutty, colorful, crispy YouTube trailer now. So far, netizen responses appear savory. The whole thing looks just quirky enough to win over people and whet their appetites.
It is unlikely that the game has any factual basis. The story goes that the real Harlan Sanders taught himself to cook as a young man to feed his siblings.
Still, KFC’s latest stunt surely gives Arby’s serious competition in the Otaku culture wars. The restaurant has traditionally held a powerful, central role in Japan’s Christmas celebrations, so anime and visual novels might not be too out there for their enterprises.
I can’t promise I’ll be playing, but there’s also NO WAY I could let that scheming harpy Aeshleigh win the Colonel’s love!
