Sorry, Liam Neeson–the trailer for THE FOREIGNER has just dropped, and Jackie Chan has already usurped your throne as the screen king of vengeful dad narratives. Not only is he kicking ass with grim-faced grit and insane combat know-how, but he’s driven purely by rage and grief–there’s no hope for saving his daughter, killed in an IRA bombing, and nothing at all for him to lose.
The upcoming blockbuster is based on 1992 novel THE CHINAMAN (retitled for fairly obvious reasons), about a father who ruthlessly seeks out the political terrorists responsible for the bomb that took his daughter’s life. Pierce Brosnan co-stars as the ex-IRA government suit that Chan has marked to give him the answers he needs: the names of the men behind the attack. It’s a cat-and-mouse game of intimidation, evasion, and balls-to-the-wall revenge, and Jackie is quiet, intense perfection in one of his few deadly serious Western film roles. Basically: sign me the f up.
