Magical Tale Gets a Third Remake in Two Years
‘Twas January of 2014 when MISS GRANNY, the whimsical tale of a woman in her seventies (Na Moon-hee) who magically transforms into her twenty year self (Shim Eun-kyung), hit screens in South Korea. Come January 2015, China presented its take on the GRANNY yarn with 20 ONCE AGAIN.
Last December, Vietnam entered the mix with another GRANNY redux, SWEET 20, that killed at the box office.
Now it’s 2016, and the GRANNY legend has continued to grow with time. Lo and behold, Japan is entering the not-so-exclusive Federation of MISS GRANNY Remakes. Per Korean Film Biz Zone, “a Japanese version of South Korean comedy hit Miss Granny has set its sights on an April 1st release date in Japan.”
Per the piece, Mitsuko Baisho, a veteran actress who has starred in such acclaimed films as VENGEANCE IS MINE, KAGEMUSHA, and THE BALLAD OF NARAYAMA, will take the reins as the titular grandmother. As her young alter ego is Mikako Tabe, star of 2005 sci-fi flick HINOKO.
