Opening in May in Japan, the cult manga series SHOUJO TSUBAKI now has a trailer featuring trippy anime segments and scored by┬áCharan-Po-Rantan’s song “Ano Ko no Jinta.” The film stars fashion model Risa Nakamura in her acting debut as Midori and is directed by TORICO. The film is adapted from Suehiro Marou’s horror manga of the same name and so far has appeared in film festivals outside of Japan under the title MIDORI.

The story centers around an orphan girl who gets sold into a traveling freak show where she is tormented by the troupe. Marou’s original manga series was published in Japan in 1984 with a subsequent release in America in 1993 under the title ‘Mr. Arashi’s Amazing Freak Show.’ It was previously adapted into an anime in 1992 by Hiroshi Harada and scored by J.A. Seazer.

Suehiro Marou is known for his “erotic grotesque” style of manga which often features human oddities and deformities as exemplified by SHOUJO TSUBAKI and its freak show. His most recent addition to his catalogue is an adaption of Edogawa Rampo’s “The Strange Tale Of Panorama Island.” An english translation is available in Last Gasp.
