Hustlers gets its origin story from a 2016 article called “The Hustlers” that appeared in New York magazine. In the wake of 2008’s Wall Street stock market crash and financial bubble pop, making money from exotic dancing and sex work looked to be more difficult than ever.
A former dancer named Samantha Foxx and her girl power gang were able to work out a successful strategy where they could lure rich clients to the Champagne Room and make hundreds to thousands of dollars off of them without actually having to perform sexual favors.
As one acquaintance of Foxx noted in the original NY Mag article, “I started noticing, these b***hes make a lot of money, and they don’t even really work.” She adds “Samantha had found some kind of loophole, where ‘I can get paid and not have to actually have sex.”
Using their feminine wiles, the gang of girls reverse both their fortunes and their emotional and physical labor, managing to outwit men who themselves thought nothing of defrauding markets and families across the nation.
Produced by STX Entertainment, The Hustlers will begin filming this week. Writer-director Lorene Scafaria declared, “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work with this dynamic group of women.” She also confirmed that shooting was to start, adding “We’re grateful to have assembled such a powerhouse cast and can’t wait to start filming at the end of the week.
