Charlyne Yi Calls Out David Cross For Racist Incident, He Responds By Saying It Was Just A Bit

American actress, voice actress, and comedian Charlyne Yi (KNOCKED UP, STEVEN UNIVERSE, PAPER HEART) took to Twitter to describe a racist encounter she had with performer David Cross. Inspired by current events, Yi decided to speak up about the experience, which caused her great anguish.

David Cross initially claimed not to recall anything of that nature happening, responding to Yi’s accusations with shock and confusion.

Later, Cross issued a public statement. It doesn’t get off to a good start.

He begins it by saying:

“I am NOT accusing Charlene [sic] of lying, and I’m truly sorry if I hurt her, it was never my intention to do that. I do not remember it like she remembers (and clearly we’re quite a bit far apart on this) but I reached out to her privately and expressed that and more, including the possibility that perhaps we are both misremembering *exactly* what happened that night.”

He tries to spin it around and claim that perhaps Yi just didn’t properly remember what actually happened because he doesn’t.

Later, in a second statement, Cross  claimed to be playing  ““a–hole racist redneck character” when he made the remarks. He claims that his use of a documented racial slur was merely part of a joke. Cross also claims that “he had NO IDEA” that Yi was upset.

Unfortunately, as Yi mentioned in her tweets. She wasn’t laughing with Cross. Ironic racism is still racism–especially when only the offending party is in on the joke. A rising actress in the industry compared to the established Cross, Yi was horrified to see such behavior, and powerless to call it out or protest.

While a lot of fans have come to Cross’s defense, including his wife Amber Tamblyn, his critics feel that his apology was both hollow and lacking.

Cue the frankly nauseating chorus of white people claiming Yi is recalling the incident for attention or making it up. I’m refusing to share their idiotic takes. A lot of them seem to believe they are the sole authority on deciding whether or not something is racist or not.

One Twitter user summarized it pretty well.

David Cross had one thing to do here: apologize for saying something racist. Instead, he first claimed not to remember than turned around and tried to say it was all a joke whilst also very passively aggressively calling Yi’s account into question.

“Can’t you take a joke?”

“Let it go, just this once.”

“Aren’t there more important things to be worrying about?”

It’s not just what Cross said and did that was racist, it’s also those that believe Yi should be silenced, or that she is not entitled to an opinion at all. We see you.
