This week Paramount released the new trailer for Rings, and despite my feelings it actually looks exciting! Yes, it’s the third installment, and yes, they’re all featuring the simple rule behind Samara’s curse: you’ll have seven days left to live once you’ve watched her video. Sure, it seems a bit tired, but this variant on the trailer details the marks of the curse, while revealing that viewers will be taken back to the well. You know, THE WELL, the one in which Samara was murdered? Yes, that one. Apparently said well has had a house built over it in this rendition. Fun! Maybe we’ll get some double haunting/exorcist thing going on, but probably not. Either way it’s a similar story line to the original:
A young woman becomes worried about her boyfriend when he explores a dark subculture surrounding a mysterious videotape said to kill the watcher seven days after he has viewed it. She sacrifices herself to save her boyfriend and in doing so makes a horrifying discovery: there is a “movie within the movie” that no one has ever seen before…
Hardcore fans are probably ripping their hair out about the ‘mythology’ behind the ‘viral video’ aspect of it with snide comments like, “Oh, haha, so Samara’s gone digital now, please,” but come on, it’s all in good fun. I will however agree, that sequels as a whole really do need to learn when to let go – hopefully this will be the last of this franchise so that someone can rip this idea and turn it into a ‘new’ J-horror film.
Side note for horror fans: Samara, played by Bonnie Morgan, is actually the same stunt actor that did the spider crawl scene from The Ring Two – so this is not her first time wearing the stringy black wig.
