Ever since Lee Chang-dong’s upcoming indie thriller BURNING was first announced, it’s been pretty much guaranteed a hot spot in Cannes’ prestigious line-up. With this pedigree of talent and source material, I wouldn’t be surprised if it comes away from the festival with some of the fancier prizes.
How excited am I for this movie? Let me count the ways:
- Steven Yeun. Per Variety, The WALKING DEAD and OKJA actor’s going to be playing “a man that has everything.” (So basically, himself.) While Yeun played a Korean translator in OKJA (Netflix’s acclaimed hit from SNOWPIERCER director Bong Joon-ho), this looks to be his first fully-Korean outing.
- Yoo Ah-in. He’s been a bit of a drama queen on social media as of late, but the guy’s still a hell of an actor. With starring turns in cinema and TV smashes like VETERAN and CHICAGO TYPEWRITER, Yoo’s sure to give us chills as
- Lee Chang-dong. This is the directorial genius behind classics like OASIS, PEPPERMINT CANDY, and SECRET SUNSHINE first film in 8 years. We’re psyched to have his work back on the big screen.
- Haruko Murakami. The plot is based on renowned Japanese author Haruko Murakami’s (NORWEGIAN WOOD, THE WIND-UP BIRD CHRONICLE) short story “Barn Burning.” So you know it’s gonna be good.
Obviously, the hype was already real. But now they’ve dropped the first teaser, and we’re all more amped than ever.
Check it out:
The moody, atmospheric teaser doesn’t give away much (or, like, anything) in terms of plot, but according to Variety, the story centers on “the encounter of two young men and a woman in their 20s who have been living in their own ways and a mysterious incident that happens among them.” Also, one of them might be an arsonist.
“It is a story about young people in today’s world,” said Lee of the film at the Busan festival last fall. “When they think of their lives and this world it must feel like a mystery.”
Lee gets it, man.
Anway, take my money!! Go get some awards!!
