Yoo Ji-tae (유지태) is a South Korean triple-threat, beginning his career as a model before breaking into acting and finally, directing. His transformation from model to into movie star began in 1998, when he first became popular through his standout roles in the crime-comedy Attack the Gas Station (1999) and Ditto (2000), a science-fiction comedy.
After gaining fame in comedic roles, Yoo pivoted to act in more serious fare. After an acclaimed turn in 2001's romantic drama One Fine Spring Day, Yoo's had three career-making starring roles in the sci-fi action flick Natural City, the horror-thriller Into the Mirror, and in Park Chan-wook's dark masterpiece Oldboy. Playing the twisted villain of Oldboy was a bold new move for Yoo, who had thus far cultivated a "nice guy" image in the media with both his movie roles and variety TV appearances.
From there, Yoo cemented his stardom in more edgy, buzzed-about work like indie auteur Hong Sang-soo's Cannes favorite Woman Is The Future of Man, the big-budget environmental thriller Antarctic Journal, the acclaimed neo-noir crime flick Running Wild, and a romance based on the real-life tragedy of the Sampsoong Department Store Collapse, Traces of Love. He made another Vengeance Trilogy appearance in 2006's Lady Vengeance.
Yoo's starred in television dramas like Star's Lover, and the massively successful Healer. But these days, he's redirected his passion towards directing. He established his own production company in 2005, earned his master's degree in film in 2008. After directing several award-winning short films, Yoo took the helm in his first feature, Mai Raitama, in 2012.
Yoo Ji-tae is married to Korean actress Kim Hyo-jin. They met in 2003 while working on a modeling shoot, began a relationship in 2006, and married in 2011. In 2014, they welcomed their first child, a baby boy.
