Kim Ki-duk (김기덕) is a Korean filmmaker who is known for his distinctive style. He began his career as a screenwriter, but focused on directing after his movie "Crocodile" (1996) became a huge hit. However, he considers "The Isle" as his international break through film. Kim is one of the most prominent contemporary Asian film directors and has won various awards for his work.

Some of his most prestigious awards include Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival for "Samaritan Girl" (2004) and Best Film at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival for "Arirang" (2011).
