She began her career in modeling while still in her first year of high school before transitioning into acting, with enormous success: her first film role in the high-brow sci-fi venture Nabi, which nabbed her a Best Actress Award at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival. From there, Kang would earn acclaim for her utterly unique performance in Oldboy opposite Choi Min-sik, taking home several Best Actress awards for her portrayal of Mi-do in a film that would become a pillar of Korean cinema. The next year, she worked with Park Chan-wook again, starring in his segment of the horror omnibus Three...Extremes.
Kang then diversified her repertoire from her resume of dark thrillers and gained more mainstream popularity in the romantic drama Rules of Dating opposite Park Hae-il, the award-winning war comedy Welcome to Dongmakgol. She even expanded beyond Korea with a starring role in Invisible Waves from Thai auteur Pen-ek Ratanruang.
In her most challenging role yet, Kang portrayed a developmentally-challenged woman in Herb. She followed up the melodrama with several wildly different rom-coms: in Why Did You Come To My House, she played a stalker; in Kiss Me, Kill Me, a suicidal woman who hires a hunky hitman to off her; and in Girlfriends, a woman who befriends her cheating man's other lovers.
Not only has Kang starred in films, but she has also been in television series, such as "Miss Ripley," "The Wedding Scheme," and "Flowers for My Life" opposite Cha Tae-hyun.
She is married to prominent Korean rapper Tablo of the hip-hop duo Epik High.
