Jun Ji-Hyun (전지현) is a South Korean actress and model. Born as Wang Ji-Hyun (왕지현), she changed her name to Jun Ji-Hyun after her acting career took off. From a young age, Jun's family and friends encouraged her to become an actress or model. In 1997, a high school friend introduced her to a photographer. Jun began modeling for Ecole Magazine shortly after.
Jun studied Theater and Film at Dongguk University and began modeling and acting in TV sitcoms in 1997. Ji-Hyun is known for her roles in advertisements and commercials. In 2005, Jun was named "one of the most bankable stars" in Korea. Since her rise to stardom, she has consistently been one of the most in-demand celebrity endorsers in Korea. However, she is most famous for her role in My Sassy Girl (2001), a romantic comedy about an unexpected relationship between a man and woman who meet on a train. Ji-Hyun won Best Actress for her role in My Sassy Girl at the Daejong Film Festival in 2002. My Sassy Girl became the highest grossing Korean comedy of all time and made it to No. 1 in multiple countries. The movie's success solidified Jun as a star not only in Korea, but all across Asia. After the success of "My Sassy Girl," Jun went on to star in The Uninvited, which did well amongst critics, and romantic comedy Windstruck.
Jun made her Hollywood breakthrough in 2006 with "Blood: The Last Vampire," an adaptation of the popular Japanese anime. During promotion for the movie, Jun gave herself the name Gianna Jun. In 2012, Jun starred in Choi Dong-hoon's The Thieves, a heist movie about a group of thieves attempting to steal a $3o million USD diamond. The success of this film is regarded as a resurgence of her career. The Thieves became the second-highest grossing Korean film of all time. In 2013, Jun starred in the renowned k-drama My Love from the Star opposite one of her The Thieves co-stars. The drama was highly successful, sparking fashion trends, new restaurants, and makeup.
Jun Ji-hyun returned to action stardom in her portrayal of a badass rebel spy in 2015's award-winning period thriller ASSASSINATION, then followed up with another romantic role in her most recent project, the 2016 fantasy drama Legend of the Blue Sea co-starring Lee Min-ho. Jun married Korean businessman, Choi Joon-hyuk in 2012. The couple has a son, born in 2016. In June 2017, her agency announced that she was pregnant with her second child.
