K-Pop Group BTS Is Going To Perform Their New Single At The Billboard Music Awards!

When it was announced that BTS was nominated for Billboard’s Top Social Artist award  again this year, were we psyched? Yeah, sure. Amped, even. But we weren’t exactly #shook. I mean, considering the ridiculous landslide by which they won last year–we’re talking a hundreds-of-millions vote margin between them and Bieber, y’all–it would be a travesty if they weren’t nominated. And after their landmark performance at the American Music Awards last year, it didn’t seem unrealistic that they could actually perform at the BBMAs, too. (Dick Clark Productions, who runs both awards shows, is a certified ARMY at this point).

And today, it was confirmed: BTS will not only be performing at the BBMAs, but they’ll be debuting the world TV premiere of the lead single from their upcoming album, Love Yourself: Tear.

This isn’t BTS’s first BBMAs nomination (and let’s be real,  they’re gonna win again). Nor is this even their first American awards show performance. But this is the first time a k-pop group will have an American TV premiere for their Korean-language release! That’s…pretty huge.

As many outlets have noted, BTS might finally be the band that makes k-pop a mainstream genre internationally. No longer labeled as the niche interest of teen girls, but acknowledged by everyone who bops to Top 40 radio. Their last album, Love Yourself: Her (part 1 of a  Love Yourself album series) peaked at no. 7 on Billboard Top 200; Steve Aoki’s remix of “Mic Drop” ft. Desiigner reached no. 28 on Hot 100. Who knows records Tear will break?

The BBMAs will be held on May 20th,  only two days after the new album drops on the 18th–so the single will be as fresh and hot off the airwaves as is sonically possible. Then, BTS will presumably immediately zoom back to Korea to promote the album on music shows over there.

Congrats, boys! All the ARMYs (Ansel Elgort and John Cena included) are so proud of you. Continue to #slay.
