Japan Disturbed By Social Media Plan To Grope High School Girls On Standardized Test Day

Schooling in Japan can be stressful and difficult. Those seeking entrance to American institutions might recall taking the SATs or ACTs–while completing those exams can be a harrowing process for many, the student is usually free to find a time and location that agrees with their schedule and timing. In Japan, the National Center Test for University Admissions is held over the same two days nationwide, and if you miss your appointment, you have to wait a WHOLE year to be tested. No exceptions. No special postponements!

Now, on top of the rigors of academia, female students are often urged to stay vigilant on their commute to school because Japan has a history of groping and sexual assault on public transportation. Last week, we posted a story of one survivor sharing her six-year-long struggle with sexual harassment and assault on the train.

In a sickening display of gloating, Japanese social media users bragged of a plot to commit sexual assault to their heart’s content on the day of the big test. The reasoning behind the perverted plan being that no girl would want to confront her attacker or take time out of her day to bring him to justice if it means missing the exam and putting their future on hold.

Rocket News 24 translated several of the disturbing statements made online, each specifically related to chikan (groping on a train) and the Center Test.

“Tomorrow’s the Center Test, and the forecast for chikan is great.”

“The number-one chance for chikan is on the days of the Center Test.”

“Since the Center Test takes place tomorrow, the conditions are perfect for chikan. All right, gonna hop on the train tomorrow and have a little nice communication with the girls.”

“You can feel up girls headed to the Center Test all you want and get off scot-free!!!”

“The Center Test is tomorrow? It’s a chikan carnival!”“I just realized something amazing. If you grope a girl on the day of the Center Test, you won’t get caught, right?”

Japanese police saw no spike in groping activities on the days of this years exam, but one does have to wonder if a lot of the abuse is going unreported.

It’s a disgusting dilemma: forcing a young woman to choose between her future college or career prospects and her own sexual wellbeing and autonomy.
