Batman Ninja marries two of the most badass concepts of all time, pairing everyone’s favorite, brooding DC hero with the iconic Japanese mercenary-spy. It’s a Western and Eastern nerd’s multicultural dream come true.
Batman was always morally grey and intertwined with both inner and literal darkness. The choice to imagine him as a ninja is awesome, inspired, and plausible.
Today, the first official footage of the project was released to the public, and the visuals alone look both badass and enchanting.
Embers dance across a smoky sky like fall leaves. Batman and his infamous, twisted nemesis The Joker cross swords on top of a gorgeously shingled Japanese roof, complete with their very own fearsome Onigawara ornaments.
Despite the beautiful feudal Japanese aesthetic and palaces fit for shoguns, there’s a ton of cool modern weaponry, gadgets, and modern day vehicles. They might be crossing katanas instead of fists, but he’s not throwing away the Bat Mobile just yet.
Fan favorite characters like Robin and anime-style, purple-haired Harley Quinn can also be seen jumping around in the trailer. Catwoman and Twoface also cameo as well. However, most ominous of all is probably a remote control the Joker can be seen switching on with both the American and Japanese flags on them. Is he trying to incite war between the two nations?
Batman Ninja has a veritable Justice League of anime talent working on it as well. There’s Kazuki Nakashima, the writer of Kill La Kill at the helm for the screenplay and Afro Samurai‘s character designer Takashi Okazaki, and animation by Kamikaze Douga, the animation company behind Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.
Watch the preview video on YouTube. And if you’re like me, you’ll watch it bunch of times to try and “ooh and ahhh” at every single detail and character reveal.
Batman Ninja will head to DVD next year, leaving me just enough time to find a friend with a nice TV screen setup.
