BTS Becomes The First K-Pop Group To Earn #1 Album And Top 10 Single On Billboard

If you follow AsianCrush at all, you’re probably either amped or irked by the content of our k-pop coverage–it’, heavy on the BTS, lately?  I’M SORRY I’M WHIPPED.  And I promise I’ll shut up about them! Seriously! Eventually. Maybe.

As soon as they stop breaking all these damn records.

Last week, they performed at the Billboard Music Awards, after winning the Top Social Artist award for the second year in a row. On Sunday, it was announced that the 7-member band of uber-talented babes’ brand new album Love Yourself: Tear  had debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 Album chart–a first for any k-pop group, and the first non-English-album to do so in the last 12 years. Fans had been speculating whether BTS would be able to take out Post Malone’s beerbongs and bentleys for the top spot, as he’s what stans fondly call a “digimon” (digital monster), with insane digital streaming numbers. The previous record high for a k-pop group was also geld by BTS, when their 2017 mini-album Love Yourself: Her peaked at #7.

But that wasn’t the only record they’d go on to break: today, Billboard’s Hot 100 dropped, and guess who made it into the Top 10? BTS’ lead single “Fake Love,” edging in at #10, the highest a k-pop group’s ever achieved (previous record, again BTS’s, was #28 for “Mic Drop Remix”). The only other Korean musician to make it in the Top 10 has been Psy for “Gagnam Style” and “Gentleman”–but even he didn’t debut there in the first week.

Even South Korean president Moon Jae-in is out here hyping the boys.

ARMYs (for the uninitiated, that’s the fandom name,  à la Beliebers), needless to say, are losing their shit. Especially considering that a Top 10 hit was a goal BTS themselves had mentioned wanting to achieve. Stans are praising Suga (real name Min Yoongi) for his eerily accurate prophesies about their success.

Spread the gospel of Minstadamus.
