Earlier this month, we talked about Shin Min-a’s chubby transformation for her role in the Kdrama OH MY VENUS. Now, we’re ready to add actress and news anchor Mirei Kiritani to the list of performers willing to transform themselves for a juicy role.
Kiritani will star in TV Asahi’s drama SUMIKA SUMIRE, based on the Takanashi Mitsuba manga series of the same name. The story follows 65 year old Sumi (Kiritani) who finds herself growing older without ever falling in love. One day, she turns back into a 20 year old, gaining another chance at youth and romance.
A challenge Kiritani will have to face head on is making her performance fresh and exciting; the young again/old again plot has become a sub-genre of sorts with the success of hits such as FREAKY FRIDAY (1976, remade in 2003), BIG (1988), 13 GOING ON 30 (2004), and 17 AGAIN (2009). Though I’ve enjoyed some of these titles, I wouldn’t want to marathon them; the similarities would build up into a repetitive crescendo of slasher-sequel proportions. The popularity of the source material (which transforms the main character into a high schooler rather than a college student – the only difference confirmed between the two adaptations thus far) may give the series an extra edge on originality.
The Friday night drama will start airing in January.
